If you want to get faster at HYROX, the tempting answer is always more intensity: harder sled pushes, brutal intervals, heavier wall balls, more redline workouts. Those pieces matter, but they are not the secret weapon.
The secret weapon is the aerobic engine that lets you hold pace, recover between stations, clear fatigue, breathe under control and keep running when everyone else starts bargaining with their legs.
That is where Zone 2 training earns its place. It is not glamorous. It does not look heroic on social media. But for HYROX athletes, aerobic durability is one of the biggest performance separators.
Why the aerobic engine matters in HYROX
HYROX is eight 1 km runs plus eight functional workout stations. The running alone creates a huge endurance demand, and the stations create repeated spikes in muscular and metabolic stress. Research on HYROX has found that endurance capacity and running-focused demands are central to performance.
In practical terms, this means you cannot simply be strong. You must be strong while breathing hard. You cannot simply be fast. You must be fast after sleds, burpees, carries, lunges and rowing. That is an aerobic problem as much as it is a strength problem.
What Zone 2 actually means
Zone 2 is commonly described as low-to-moderate intensity aerobic work. Depending on the model, it often sits below the first lactate or ventilatory threshold, where breathing is controlled and lactate remains relatively stable. Heart-rate formulas can estimate it, but they are imperfect.

The goal is not to collect random easy cardio. The goal is to build aerobic durability while preserving the quality of strength, speed, threshold, VO2 and station sessions.
