WHAT TESTING CAN REVEAL
UNDERSTAND THE ENGINE BEHIND YOUR PERFORMANCE
Your results are interpreted as a system. No single metric is treated as a universal score, and every finding is checked against training history, race data, movement demands and the current goal.
VO₂max
MODEL-DERIVED
The highest rate at which your body can use oxygen during intense exercise.
- Performance question
- Is your aerobic ceiling constraining repeated running and recovery?
- HYROX / hybrid relevance
- Supports repeated running, aerobic recovery and the ability to tolerate race volume.
Remote profile. Directly measured only with acceptable gas-exchange data.
VLamax
MODEL-DERIVED
A protocol-dependent estimate of maximal lactate formation rate, used to describe glycolytic capacity.
- Performance question
- How does glycolytic capacity fit your endurance and high-output demands?
- HYROX / hybrid relevance
- Adds context to the profile; station surges and subsequent running must also be assessed directly.
Lower is not automatically better. No universal HYROX target is established by the studies below.
LT1
CALCULATED FROM ACCEPTED INPUTS
An estimate of the first lactate threshold, used to help organize lower-intensity training.
- Performance question
- Where does easy work begin to create a meaningfully higher metabolic cost?
- HYROX / hybrid relevance
- Guides aerobic volume, recovery running and pacing discipline.
Method-dependent; not interchangeable with every wearable Zone 2 definition.
MLSS
CALCULATED FROM ACCEPTED INPUTS
An estimate of the highest constant workload at which blood lactate remains stable under defined test criteria.
- Performance question
- What intensity can you sustain before the cost rises too quickly?
- HYROX / hybrid relevance
- Supports threshold prescription and repeatable race-pace decisions.
A modeled MLSS is not a directly verified steady-state test or a HYROX race-pace guarantee.
FatMax
MODEL-DERIVED
The intensity at which estimated fat oxidation is highest.
- Performance question
- Where is fat contribution likely to be greatest during steady work?
- HYROX / hybrid relevance
- Informs aerobic development and longer-duration fueling questions.
Not a fat-loss zone, a reason to restrict carbohydrate, or an exact fueling prescription.
Fat + carbohydrate use
MODEL-DERIVED
The estimated contribution of fat and carbohydrate across intensity.
- Performance question
- How does fuel demand change as the work gets harder?
- HYROX / hybrid relevance
- Helps frame pacing, carbohydrate-use and training-support decisions.
Interpreted with duration, tolerance, heat and prior practice.
Training zones
CALCULATED FROM ACCEPTED INPUTS
Individual intensity ranges derived from the accepted profile and checked against effort and training response.
- Performance question
- What effort belongs in each training objective?
- HYROX / hybrid relevance
- Turns test evidence into practical running and conditioning targets.
Delivered with priorities and progression markers.
Blood-lactate response
DIRECTLY MEASURED
Timed blood-lactate samples interpreted against workload and recovery.
- Performance question
- How does blood lactate concentration change across the selected workloads?
- HYROX / hybrid relevance
- Adds context for intensity and threshold interpretation; concentration reflects both lactate appearance and removal.
Blood concentration is measured; muscle production and clearance rates are not directly measured by a single sample.
Running economy
DIRECTLY MEASURED
The oxygen or energy cost of producing a given running speed.
- Performance question
- How expensive is your pace—and does that cost change under fatigue?
- HYROX / hybrid relevance
- Helps explain why equal pace does not mean equal physiological demand.
Only when suitable steady-state gas-exchange and speed data are collected. A movement video does not measure oxygen cost.
HYROX transfer + durability
WPL INTERPRETATION
A coaching inference connecting the engine to race, station and compromised-running evidence.
- Performance question
- Does the metabolic profile actually explain where your race breaks down?
- HYROX / hybrid relevance
- Helps weigh metabolic, pacing, strength, movement and technical explanations.
Not an INSCYD output and not an athlete diagnosis.
EVIDENCE TRANSPARENCY
MEASURED, MODELED AND INTERPRETED—CLEARLY LABELED.
The athlete should be able to understand where every conclusion comes from.
