WPL RATE × DRAG METHOD
Your best RowErg setting is the combination that lets you create useful power with a rhythm you can hold under fatigue—and still leave the machine ready to run and work well.
The lever on the flywheel changes how much air enters the machine. It is not a simple resistance dial and the same number can feel different from machine to machine.
Drag factor is the monitor’s measurement of flywheel deceleration. Use it to compare settings accurately across different RowErgs.
Strokes per minute describe rhythm—not power by themselves. The goal is to find a rate and drag combination that produces repeatable speed.
Record the drag factor at several damper positions so you know what the machine is actually delivering.
Test controlled stroke rates and notice where pace, power and technique remain economical.
Repeat the strongest candidates under matched conditions and check what happens to the next run or station.
BEFORE YOU BEGIN
Use the same machine when possible, warm up consistently and keep test duration, rest and effort target the same. Change one variable at a time.
A stronger match usually keeps pace and power stable without the stroke becoming rushed, locally exhausting or expensive to the next task. Treat the result as a candidate—not a diagnosis. Your response under fatigue and the downstream cost still matter.
